LESSONS LEARNED (as summarized by the blog editor):

DON’t BREAK THE LAW, DON’T BE IMMORAL, BUT EXPECT TO HAVE TO “BREAK THE RULES” (You’ll need Chutzpa [persistance])

1) LEVERAGE MENTORS WITH RESOURCES (OFTEN $$$ and ACCESS TO RESTRICTED RESOURCES) ESPECIALLY IN THE FACE OF OSSIFIED INSTITUTIONAL SYSTEMS

2) PURSUE SCIENCE AND INNOVATION OVER GREED AND PRESTIGE. BUT DON’T SO FOOLISH AS TO BELIEVE YOU’LL BE POSITIVELY REINFORCED {translation: academic experts may feel threatened and will act like dicks; venture capitalists may act like money grubbing greed heads–DON’T BE NAIVE; EXPECT CHILDISH/SELFISH BEHAVIOR; KNOW WHAT YOU’RE WALKING INTO}

3) PHILANTHROPY (Annette and Leonard Shapiro re: their son David–people whose families have been affected by your area of exploration) AND CLINIC WITH DIABETIC DOGS (unconventional science trial avenues)

4) The NIH “MISSES” brilliant scientists.

5) SERENDIPITY AND COLLABORATION MATTER.

6) TRANSLATION, SCALE

7) NANTWORKS

8) WHAT DOES WEALTH MEAN? MISSION DRIVEN LIVES; LEGACY; CROSS-HYBRIDIZATION of work with the SMARTEST PEOPLE

ABOUT THE SERIES:

The CNSI and the IMED Seminar Series are teaming up to create a new educational seminar series that will be held once a month called Managing Inventions. These seminars will focus on the actual logistics of how to manage and build on discoveries here on campus. The goals of this series are to connect the UCLA community, bring to light available resources, and communicate the stories of successful discoveries.
